TRANSMISSION REPAIR
Not every transmission problem is a transmission rebuild
A modern automatic is as much a computer as it is a gearbox. Shift quality is decided by solenoids, pressure sensors and software, and a fault in any of those feels exactly like mechanical wear from the driver’s seat. That is why we scan the transmission control module, read live pressure and temperature data and check fluid condition before anyone uses the word rebuild.
Heat is the thing that kills transmissions here. Fluid breaks down faster in Arizona than almost anywhere, and towing or long climbs in summer accelerate it further — which is why a fluid service at the right interval is the cheapest transmission work you will ever pay for, and why we always check the fluid before quoting anything bigger.

WHEN TO COME IN
Signs your transmission needs attention
Caught early, most of these are a service or a sensor. Left alone, they are not.
◑
Slipping or flaring between gears
Engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate with them. Often pressure or fluid, sometimes wear.
◉
Harsh or clunky shifts
A bang into gear is a pressure or solenoid problem more often than it is worn clutches.
◍
Delay before it engages
You select Drive and the car waits. Usually low or degraded fluid — and it gets worse from here.
◎
Burnt smell from the fluid
Fluid should be red and slick. Dark and burnt means it has been running hot.
◐
Red fluid on the driveway
Transmissions are far less tolerant of running low than engines are. Get the leak found.
◈
Check engine or transmission light
Transmission codes tell us a lot — including which faults are electronic rather than mechanical.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK
Transmission FAQ
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
Follow your manufacturer’s schedule, and treat Phoenix as severe service — heat is what degrades the fluid. If yours is dark or smells burnt, it is due regardless of what the odometer says.
Is a flush or a fluid-and-filter service better?
It depends on the transmission and its history. We look at the fluid and the vehicle’s service record and tell you which one is appropriate — on a neglected high-mileage unit the aggressive option is not always the right call.
My transmission slips. Does it need a rebuild?
Not necessarily. Slipping can come from low or degraded fluid, a pressure control solenoid or a sensor fault, and those are far cheaper. We rule those out before quoting internal work.
Do you rebuild transmissions?
We diagnose the fault, handle services, solenoid, sensor, cooler and leak repairs in-house, and for internal failures we lay out the rebuild-versus-replace options and prices so you can decide with real numbers.
Why does it shift badly only when hot?
Fluid thins as it heats, so worn parts and marginal line pressure show up hot and hide cold. It is a useful clue — we road test both ways so we are diagnosing the fault you actually have.
What will it cost?
A diagnosis is a fixed piece of work; the repair depends on what we find. You get a RepairPal fair-price estimate first and nothing proceeds without your approval.
