Heater & Defroster Repairin Phoenix and Peoria, AZ
No heat on a January morning, or a windshield that will not clear? The heater shares its plumbing with the cooling system, so a heat complaint is often the first warning of something bigger.

HEATER & DEFROSTER REPAIR
A cold heater is usually a message from the cooling system
Cabin heat is waste heat. Hot coolant leaves the engine, runs through a small radiator behind the dash called the heater core, and a fan blows across it. Nothing generates the heat on purpose — which is why no heat so often means low coolant, a stuck-open thermostat or a heater core that has clogged, and why it is worth checking before it turns into an overheating problem.
Phoenix winters are short, but the defroster is the part that matters most: it is the only thing that clears a fogged or frosted windshield quickly, and it runs the A/C compressor to dry the air. A car that cannot defrost is a car you cannot see out of on the handful of cold mornings we do get.

Cooling system checked first
No heat is often low coolant or a stuck thermostat — cheaper to catch here. -
Heater core flow tested
Inlet and outlet temperatures, not guesswork. -
Blend doors and actuators
The clicking behind the dash that sends you heat when you asked for cold. -

WHEN TO COME IN
Signs your heater or defroster is failing
Most of these overlap with cooling-system faults, which is exactly why they are worth checking early.
◑
Blows cold no matter the setting
Low coolant, a stuck-open thermostat or a blocked heater core. All three are worth finding before summer.
◉
Warm at speed, cold at idle
Classic low-coolant or weak-water-pump behaviour — there is not enough flow through the heater core to keep up.
◍
Sweet smell or greasy film on the glass
That is coolant. A leaking heater core vents it straight into the cabin, and it will keep dropping your coolant level.
◎
Defroster is slow or will not clear the glass
The defrost setting runs the A/C to dry the air. If the A/C is down, the defroster goes with it.
◐
Clicking behind the dash
A blend door actuator stripping its gears. It is what decides whether you get heater air or cold air.
◈
Fan works on high only
A failed blower motor resistor. Small part, and it usually gives you this exact warning first.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK
Heater and defroster FAQ
Why does my heater blow cold?
Most often the engine is not getting hot enough or coolant is not reaching the heater core — low coolant, a thermostat stuck open, air in the system or a clogged core. We check them in that order, because the cheap causes are also the most common.
Is a heater core a big job?
It can be. On many vehicles the dash has to come out, which is what makes it expensive. That is exactly why we confirm the core is the fault with flow and temperature testing before quoting it, rather than assuming.
My windshield fogs up and will not clear. Is that the heater?
Partly. Defrost runs the air conditioning to pull moisture out of the air, so a failed A/C shows up first as a defroster that will not clear the glass. A plugged cabin air filter or a coolant leak into the cabin will do it too.
Does no heat mean my engine could overheat?
It can be the same underlying problem — low coolant or a failing water pump will cause both. That is why we treat a no-heat complaint as a cooling-system inspection, not just a comfort issue.
Do I really need a heater in Phoenix?
For heat, not often. For the defroster, yes — it is the only way to clear a fogged windshield quickly, and it works on humid monsoon mornings as much as cold ones.
What does it cost?
It depends on what failed: a blower resistor and a heater core are at opposite ends of the range. You get a RepairPal fair-price estimate before we start and a call before anything changes.
