ENGINE REPAIR
The most expensive part of your car deserves a diagnosis, not a guess
Engine work covers an enormous range — a leaking valve cover gasket and a spun bearing are both “engine repair”, and they are not remotely the same conversation. The job of the first visit is to find out which one you actually have, using compression and leak-down testing, live data and a proper look at the oil, rather than pricing the worst case and hoping.
Phoenix heat makes this its own discipline. Sustained triple-digit ambient temperatures push cooling systems to their limit, cook gaskets and seals faster than they age in milder climates, and turn a small coolant leak into a warped head far quicker than most people expect. A lot of the engine damage we see started as an overheat that someone drove through.

WHEN TO COME IN
Signs your engine needs attention
Engines rarely fail without warning. These are the warnings — and the sooner they are looked at, the smaller the repair.
◑
Temperature gauge climbing
Stop driving. Overheating is the single fastest way to turn a cooling repair into an engine repair.
◉
Knocking or deep tapping
A rhythmic knock that rises with engine speed is a bearing or piston noise. It does not improve on its own.
◍
Blue or white smoke from the exhaust
Blue is oil burning; white that lingers is coolant. Both point inside the engine.
◎
Losing power or hesitating
Compression, fuel delivery or timing. Worth measuring before it turns into a misfire that damages the catalytic converter.
◐
Oil spots where you park
Every seal is fixable. Running low on oil because of one is what does the damage.
◈
Milky residue under the oil cap
Coolant mixing with oil. Sometimes condensation on a short-trip car, sometimes a head gasket — worth knowing which.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK
Engine repair FAQ
Is it worth repairing or should I replace the engine?
That depends on what failed, what the rest of the car is worth, and how long you plan to keep it. We give you the numbers for each option rather than steering you — and we will tell you plainly when the honest answer is that the car is not worth the repair.
My engine overheated once. Is it damaged?
Not necessarily, but it needs checking. One overheat can warp a head or cook a head gasket, and the symptoms sometimes take weeks to appear. A cooling-system pressure test and a combustion-gas check will tell us whether anything got past.
What does the knocking noise mean?
It depends on when it happens. A knock under load that follows engine speed points at bearings; a lighter tick at idle is often valve train; a rattle on acceleration can be fuel-related pre-ignition. We listen, then confirm with testing.
How much does engine repair cost?
The range is genuinely huge, which is why we do not quote before diagnosing. Once we know what failed you get a RepairPal fair-price estimate, and nothing happens until you approve it.
Do you do timing chains and head gaskets?
Yes — timing chains and belts, head gaskets, valve train work, seals and gaskets, cooling-system repairs and full engine replacement, all in-house with ASE-certified technicians.
How long will it take?
A diagnosis is usually the same day. Internal engine work takes longer and depends on parts. We give you a timeline with the estimate, and a complimentary Uber or Lyft within 5 miles while you are here.
