EXHAUST SYSTEM REPAIR
From the manifold back, quiet and sealed
An exhaust leak is louder, smellier and more dangerous than it looks. Ahead of the oxygen sensors it also feeds the engine computer bad information, which costs fuel economy and sets codes that look like something else entirely.
We locate the leak, repair what can be repaired and replace what cannot — and we test a catalytic converter before recommending one, because they are not cheap.

WHEN TO COME IN
Signs of an exhaust problem
Fumes in the cabin are a safety issue. Everything else here is cheaper the sooner it is fixed.
◑
Louder than it used to be
A leak somewhere in the system, usually at a joint or in the muffler.
◉
Exhaust smell inside the cabin
Fumes are getting in. Do not put this one off.
◍
A rattle under the car
A broken hanger, a loose heat shield, or a converter coming apart inside.
◎
Ticking that fades as it warms up
The classic sign of an exhaust manifold or gasket leak closing as metal expands.
◐
A converter code on the scanner
Often an oxygen sensor or an upstream leak rather than the converter itself.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK
Exhaust repair FAQ
Do I need a new catalytic converter if I have a converter code?
Not necessarily. That code often comes from an oxygen sensor or an upstream exhaust leak. We test before recommending a converter, because it is one of the most expensive parts on the car.
Is an exhaust leak dangerous?
It can be. Carbon monoxide entering the cabin is a real risk, so a leak you can smell inside the car is worth fixing promptly.
Can a muffler be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes, if the shell is sound and the leak is at a joint. We tell you honestly which one yours is.
Why does my exhaust tick when cold and go quiet when warm?
Metal expands as it heats and closes the gap. It is the classic signature of a manifold or gasket leak.
Will fixing the exhaust improve fuel economy?
If the leak was upstream of the oxygen sensors, often yes — the engine computer had been working from bad readings.
Is the work warrantied?
Yes — 24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labor, whichever comes first.
