FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM
It only helps if it engages when you need it
Four-wheel drive spends most of its life unused, which is exactly why it fails quietly. Actuators seize, fluid goes unchanged, vacuum lines crack — and you find out on the one day you were counting on it.
We service the transfer case and differentials, test engagement in every mode, and repair the actuator and electronic faults that stop four-wheel drive from going in.
-
Engagement tested, not assumed
We confirm it actually shifts in and out. -
Transfer case fluid service
Often the most neglected fluid on the vehicle. -
Actuator and sensor diagnostics
Vacuum, electric and hub actuators. -
Front and rear differential service
The rest of the driveline, while it is on the lift.
WHEN TO COME IN
Signs your 4WD needs service
The best time to find out four-wheel drive does not work is before you need it.
◑
The 4WD light flashes and never engages
An actuator, switch or encoder motor fault stopping the sequence part way.
◉
Grinding or a clunk when engaging
Worn hubs, or a transfer case chain that has stretched.
◍
Vibration only in four-wheel drive
Driveshaft, U-joint, or tires that no longer match each other.
◎
Binding on turns on dry pavement
Normal for a part-time system, a fault on all-wheel drive.
◐
A leak under the transfer case
Output seals. Inexpensive to fix, expensive to ignore.
◈
It has not been used in a year
Worth engaging and servicing before you have to rely on it.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK
Four wheel drive FAQ
How often should transfer case fluid be changed?
Follow your manufacturer interval, and sooner if you tow or drive off pavement. It is a small service that prevents a large repair.
Why will my 4WD not engage?
Most often an actuator or encoder motor, sometimes a switch or a vacuum leak. We test the engagement sequence and find where it stops.
Is it bad to use 4WD on dry pavement?
On a part-time system, yes — the driveline binds because the front and rear axles cannot turn at different speeds. Full-time and all-wheel drive systems are designed for it.
Do all four tires need to match?
On four-wheel and all-wheel drive, yes. Different sizes or wear levels put constant strain on the driveline.
Can you service all-wheel drive crossovers too?
Yes — transfer cases, power take-off units, rear drive modules and couplings.
Is the work warrantied?
Yes — 24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labor, whichever comes first.
